Palantir Technologies is an American software company specializing in big data analytics and artificial intelligence. It operates in a sector that is highly strategic today for both governments and private corporations
In practice, Palantir doesn’t collect its own data.
Instead, it builds incredibly powerful software platforms that help organizations integrate, process, visualize, and analyze massive volumes of data that were previously siloed and disconnected.
Founded in 2003 with initial backing from PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel and In-Q-Tel (the CIA’s venture capital arm), Palantir initially made a name for itself in the defense and government intelligence sectors.
Today, however, it has a massive footprint in the private corporate market.
The Origin: Born out of the Aftermath of 9/11
Palantir Technologies was founded in 2003 and is currently headquartered in Denver, Colorado.
The name comes directly from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings saga: in the lore, a Palantír is an indestructible magical sphere capable of showing events taking place across vast distances in near-real-time.

To lead the company, Alex Karp was appointed as CEO. Karp is not a traditional engineer but rather a philosopher holding a doctorate from Goethe University Frankfurt—a background that continues to shape the company’s distinctly unconventional, intellectual corporate identity to this day.3
What Does Palantir Actually Do?
The most precise description is this: Palantir builds software that ingests colossal, fragmented piles of data from wildly disparate origins—such as military databases, hospital records, supply chains, and financial transactions—and translates them into actionable insights that help human operators make high-stakes decision4s rapidly.
Palantir’s platforms function as an overlay on top of existing enterprise architecture, meaning clients don’t have to rip and replace their legacy infrastructure.

Crucially, Palantir does not harvest, store, or sell data.

Gotham is the platform that put Palantir on the map. It is deployed extensively across US intelligence, law enforcement, and defense agencies, including the Department of Defense (DoD), the CIA, the NSA, and the FBI.
How it works in practice: When intelligence analysts need to instantly cross-reference satellite imagery with communications intercepts, wiretaps, financial transactions, criminal histories, and location tracking to neutralize a threat—Gotham synthesizes it all in seconds.
It uncovers hidden connections (“connecting the dots”) to predict and deter attacks, map out criminal networks, or coordinate active military operations.
Beyond US federal agencies, Gotham is widely utilized by allied nations.
One of Palantir’s key international defense clients using the system is the Ukrainian Armed Forces.7
Palantir Foundry — Operational Control for Corporations and Civil Government
Foundry acts as a centralized “operating system” for major enterprises spanning oil and gas, banking, automotive manufacturing, and healthcare.
It integrates a company’s entire factory floor, supply chain, and financial metrics into a single source of truth.
For instance, an automaker can use Foundry to predict precisely which component will bottleneck the assembly line weeks in advance by calculating supplier constraints alongside global weather patterns.
Industrial and pharmaceutical giants use Foundry to dismantle internal data silos and accelerate strategic decision-making through no-code interfaces.
Key enterprise clients utilizing Foundry include Morgan Stanley, Merck KGaA, Airbus, PG&E, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.8
Palantir AIP — The Artificial Intelligence Platform
Launched to capitalize on the paradigm shift of Generative AI, this platform connects Large Language Models (LLMs) securely to a company’s private, proprietary data.
AIP allows organizations to deploy powerful models like GPT-4o within highly classified or restricted networks, offering robust auditability, data masking, and chain-of-thought reasoning.
The platform can be fully deployed via Oracle Cloud infrastructure and serves both defense and commercial clients.9
In simple terms, AIP lets entities harness the power of modern LLMs on sensitive internal data without leaking data beyond their secure parameters.

The US Government — The Anchor Client
In March 2026, Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg confirmed in an official memo to Pentagon leadership that Palantir’s Maven AI system would officially transition into a formal Program of Record for the US Department of Defense.
The directive outlines that the Maven Smart System is designed to equip warfighters with automated capabilities to “detect, deter, and dominate” adversaries across multiple operational domains.11
Constituting a massive piece of Palantir’s balance sheet, roughly half of the company’s total revenue is driven by government contracts, while the remaining half stems from commercial enterprise sectors like healthcare and manufacturing.12
International Defense and State Allies
Palantir has aggressively scaled its partnerships with NATO, Israel, and European governments, delivering “autonomous decision platforms” that fuse big data with generative AI.13
The Ukrainian military actively relies on Gotham to coordinate tactical maneuvers in its ongoing war against Russia.
Similarly, Denmark fully integrated Palantir across its military, law enforcement, and national intelligence sectors, while the United Kingdom relies on the company for domestic security and public health initiatives.
Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals
During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the British National Health Service (NHS) deployed Foundry to orchestrate real-time hospital capacity data and national vaccine distribution.
In the life sciences sector, giants like Merck and Pfizer leverage the platform to synthesize clinical trial data and streamline global pharmaceutical supply chains.14
Heavy Industry and Aerospace
Airbus utilizes Foundry to monitor and optimize its global production architecture for the A350 aircraft, tracking infinite manufacturing variables simultaneously.
Back in 2017, Palantir and Airbus co-developed Skywise, an aviation data platform that unifies flight data, engineering logs, and operations to optimize global fleet safety and maintenance.15
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles similarly embedded Foundry to run analytics on production output, drive vehicle quality assurance, and optimize delivery pipelines.16
By the Numbers: Exponential Growth
For the full fiscal year of 2025, Palantir reported massive revenue of $4.48 billion, representing a staggering 56% increase year-over-year.
US commercial revenue alone spiked 109% to $1.47 billion, while US government revenue climbed 55% to land at $1.86 billion.17
Moving into the first quarter of 2026, revenue surged to $1.63 billion—marking an 85% explosion compared to the same period in 2024.18
A key catalyst behind this financial surge is a strategic architecture partnership with Nvidia.
Palantir and Nvidia joined forces to launch a blueprint for a Sovereign AI Operating System.
The initiative couples Nvidia’s advanced Blackwell Ultra hardware systems with Palantir’s enterprise software stack—including AIP, Foundry, Apollo, and AIP Hub—enabling defense and state entities to deploy secure AI environments across on-premise, edge, and sovereign cloud networks.19
The Controversies: The Price of Total Surveillance
Palantir intentionally operates out of the public eye for strategic reasons.
However, its immense analytical capabilities raise serious civil liberties and ethical concerns that require transparent scrutiny:
- Immigration and Deportation: Palantir has faced severe, prolonged public blowback over its contracts with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The company provides investigative data-mining systems used to orchestrate complex deportation operations. ICE recently finalized a $30 million contract with Palantir to build out its specialized surveillance infrastructure. Records indicate Palantir has been a core software contractor for ICE since 2011.20
- Predictive Policing: A variant of Palantir’s Gotham platform was deployed as a covert predictive policing tool by the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) between 2012 and 2018, triggering intense civil rights controversies over racial profiling, data privacy, and systemic bias.21
- Kinetic Warfare: International legal scholars have raised alarms that heavy military reliance on target-selection platforms risks eroding critical human assessment, potentially offshoring the qualitative moral judgments necessary to calculate proportionality in armed conflict.
Conversely, defenders of the technology maintain that the AI functions strictly as an advisory system, leaving the ultimate moral and kinetic decisions entirely to human commanders.
CEO Alex Karp frequently offers a pragmatic, philosophical rebuttal to these criticisms: he argues that a technologically dominant Western democracy is infinitely preferable to a world where authoritarian regimes dictate the terms and capabilities of global artificial intelligence.
Tha policy is entirely consistent with the geopolitical lens that forged the company in 2003.
Democracies, after all, possess institutional checks and balances to hold rogue officials accountable—tools that are fundamentally absent in autocratic regimes.
How Palantir Intersects with Everyday Citizens
Palantir rarely makes headlines in consumer tech media. You won’t find an app for it on the iOS App Store, there is no $20-a-month consumer subscription model, and it will never run directly on your phone.
Yet, the high-stakes architectures that shape modern warfare, border enforcement, global pandemic responses, and multi-trillion-dollar corporate supply chains run directly on Palantir’s rails.
Now that militarized AI has transitioned into an official defense baseline across Western armed forces, Palantir is no longer an obscure niche company.
It stands as one of the most vital infrastructures of power in the modern world—and understanding its capabilities is essential to understanding how critical decisions are executed in the era of weaponized big data.
And many critical decisions can affect you as an ordinary citizen.
Regardless of our opinion concerning the use of this technology, it is undeniable that Palantir’s systems provide a massive strategic advantage to those who use them.
One thing is certain: Technology is inherently neutral; the good or evil it can cause depends fundamentally on who is using it.
